We All Want An Effective Program For Weight Loss

weight loss

It's a little after January but most of us have likely put losing weight into our resolutions for the New Year. Whether it's a few pounds gained over the holidays, post-baby weight, or weight gained gradually over a lifetime, everyone is looking for weight loss that really works. That's great but at the same time most of us are impatient. We also want the process to be fast, uncomplicated and painless. Sorry folks, but this is not what is likely to happen.

Supposing you go on a crash diet and drop those 20 pounds in just a few weeks. This is a bad idea. If you suddenly restrict calories severely your body thinks it is going to starvation mode and instantly goes into survival mode. What does that mean? It means your metabolism will slow so that your body can hang on to that fat in the event that you never eat again. I know you don't want to hear it, but the most successful weight loss programs hinge on altering your eating habits, not starving yourself. I can say from experience that the minute I say I will NOT eat any cookies, I immediately begin to fantasize about cookies and obsess with getting just one. Of course if it is Fig Newton's or another favorite cookie, just one becomes an entire bag.

There are a considerations that are very important for your success. Don't exclude any food from your diet. Portion control is the key to your success. A serving of meat should be the size of your palm. What? That's nothing: that's two bites, for Heaven's sake. Consider, however, that you won't starve if you fill the rest of your plate with healthy things like fresh vegetables. Your mother was right. You do need to eat your vegetables. If you don't know what a serving looks like, measure it out and see. My favorite thing to use is a breakfast plate. The plate is small. I can still fill to overflowing and not overeat. They actually make plates that have lines showing where your meat, vegetables, and grains should fit in the appropriate portions. I think one reason Weight Watchers and other programs like it have been around for so many years is because they work. They don't eliminate items you like from your diet. They coach you to make better choices and control your portions. If you don't really have time to cook and can afford it; programs like Nutrisystem and Jenny Craig will do all the cooking for you. You will learn what a serving size looks like. In addition, most of these programs offer support by means of meetings or individual counselors. If meetings are not your thing, you can also participate in Weight Watchers online.

One thing I have not mentioned is exercise. I know, I know; you detest to exercise. Many of us do hate it. If you cannot go to gym; you can walk. Park farther from the store where you are shopping and walk around. Get up from your desk and move around once an hour. Take the stairs every so often. Take advantage of exercise tapes or TV shows that guide you through exercises. My spouse loves a stationary bike. I found it to be very handy for hanging clothes. It's an individual choice, certainly. If you pick an activity that you like, you will be more likely to stick with it. Enlist a friend or co-worker to walk with you during lunch. The more extensive your support system, the more likely you are to be successful.

It may take longer to lose weight sensibly; but think of it this way. If you do right; you'll never have to worry about diet again. It will be the lifestyle changes you have made that will keep you on track forever.
